The Johnny Memphis Story

Back

My story starts in 2000, when I was in my mid-thirty’s, whilst accompanying friends to the Station Pier Restaurant in Port Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. At this particular venue there was a band playing and one of the friends I was with mentioned to the leader of the band that I sang Elvis songs. After some encouragement from my friends, I took the stage for the first time and sang two of my favourite Elvis tracks “Love Me Tender” and “Don’t Be Cruel”.

I was pleasantly surprised by the reception of the crowd and later in the evening the owner of the restaurant approached me and asked if I would like to make this a regular Saturday night gig. So began my life as an Elvis Presley tribute artist.

From these solo appearances my popularity grew, as did the number of appearances. These included offers to sing at weddings as well as several corporate and charitable events.

During 2001 and 2002, the number of appearances I was asked to do was increasing rapidly. One of the highlights during this period was when I was asked to appear in Melbourne before an Australian Heavyweight Title fight.

I may not have won the bout, but I certainly won the crowd.

During 2003 I was approached by a Roy Orbison tribute band and asked to join them. Our first year together was taken up with rehearsals and perfecting our act. Once this had been accomplished to everyone’s satisfaction, we decided to take it on the road.

The band had been playing for almost ten years prior to me joining them, so naturally with a new line-up and the 10 months rehearsal behind us, we were all a little nervous before our first performance which took place in Geelong, Victoria. (Approximately 85km from Melbourne).

Even with our months of rehearsal, not everything went as smoothly as we had planned. With the band playing the intro to the first song, I took a deep breadth and let rip into a non-functioning microphone. With cries of “sing up, we can’t hear you”, the embarrassment was soon replaced with applause and cheers as we finally got the microphone working.

Now that would have been enough to put most people off, but as a professional outfit we continued as if nothing had happened, until during the fourth song and doing my very best Elvis moves across the front of the stage and encouraging the front row to join in, I was so engrossed in my performance that I completely misjudged the end of the stage and fell off.

Landing flat on my back at the feet of the audience, I continued with my performance until I was able to regain my feet. Returning to the stage we finished the song to loud cheers and applause. There was one lady in the front row that kept pointing at me, so being the consummate professional I approached the front of the stage again, this time with slightly more caution, leant down to shake her hand, only to be informed that my fly was open.

2003 turned out to be a very busy year, and during December I had the great honour of meeting James Burton who was the lead guitarist for the Elvis TCB band during the Vegas years.

What made this meeting even more interesting was that James had walked into my business premises (The Car Brokers) which is also in Melbourne and was drawn there by the array of memorabilia, and we spent a few hours talking about cars and even sang a couple of Elvis songs together.

Later that day, he was kind enough to invite me back to his hotel and be introduced to the rest of the TCB Band. What a gentleman and what an honour for me.

2004 was another turning point for the band. Martin Penrose (Roy Orbison), Trevor (lead guitar), Gary (bass), Geoff (drums), Sam (keyboard), Jackie and Laura (backing vocals) and myself started touring seriously with over 50 shows booked for the year. At the end of the year I was invited on a solo tour to Greece and performed to enthusiastic crowds wherever I went.

2005: One of the things I have learnt during my time performing is the number of amazing people you can meet. One such person was a lady by the name of Doris whom I met during a show at the Grand Star Hotel in Melbourne. I had noticed that she was videoing the show and afterwards I asked her if I could see what she had taken.
I was impressed with what she had done and that started a good friendship. Without asking, I was treated to regular visits from her and she would bring her latest video and photographs for me to view.

2007 was fantastic year full of great performances and sold out shows in most cities. I am definately looking forward to 2008 and expect it to be even bigger and better !!
